No ‘Demon In A Bottle’ Set For Iron Man Sequel

Some have called Iron Man’s Demon In A Bottle arc to be his best (and most important), and it is undoubtedly one of Tony Stark’s most human and tragic moments in his almost five decade existence. Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 touched on Stark’s alcoholism…but in a much lighter tone, really missing – in my mind – an excellent opportunity for glory. Shane Black, the director of Iron Man 3 (due to start shooting next year), says that the next film will be leaving Stark’s alcoholism behind completely.

Black sat down with the great people at Comic Book Resources during the Long Beach Comic Con for a discussion about both his career and the upcoming sequel. Here’s what he had to say about Iron Man 3 and “Demon In A Bottle”:

CBR: When talking about “Iron Man,” you’ve mentioned “Demon In A Bottle” a couple of times — is that sort of darker tone something that you want to play with in the movie?

Black: No, because if we go there — it’s part of Tony’s character, but I think the “Demon In A Bottle” aspect, if you go there, you really have to go there. The film then becomes about that, because the journey that involves recovering from alcoholism is an entire movie. I mean, I want to keep it dark and interesting and edgy and spicy and all those things, but I don’t think we want to go as far as to deal with Tony’s descent into alcoholic madness. That’s maybe not where we want to be.
