Central Canada Comic Con 2011: Day 3 / Wrap-Up

WRITTEN BY Mike Haynes and Rob Brambilla   Posted on 30 October 2011   C4 2011, Comic Convention

It’s been one heck of weekend but, as they say, all good things must come to an end. To cap-off this weekend’s Central Canada Comic Con, Comics Editor Mike and Video Games Editor Rob share their opinions of the final day of the event, the weekend as a whole and the con’s future.

Mike:

It’s certainly not easy to put together a comic convention in just twelve months time. Booking guests, reserving the space and setting up programming takes time and dedication. What’s even harder is putting together the same quality convention that people have come to expect in just four months, which is exactly what this year’s organizers were able to do. Many thought that with Wizard bailing out of C4 we would have to set our expectations a bit lower than usual given the rush that was put on the organizers but, having made it through the entire event and spending the bulk of my weekend there, I’d say that wasn’t the case at all.

As we mentioned in our notes from both days one and two, the event was stacked with pretty much anything you could want in the way of hobbies and collectibles. From wrestling and sword fighting to comics and collectible cards. Video game tournaments to Magic: The Gathering games, the Central Canada Comic Con had it all.

While day three was the last day of this year’s event, you never would have guessed it by looking at the attendance. Presumably because of William Shatner making his only appearance of the weekend, what seemed like thousands (I have no clue what the official numbers will be as of yet) of fans roamed the isles of the Winnipeg Convention Center checking out the great variety of vendors, waiting in lines patiently for autographs from the various celebrities and taking part in many of the day’s costume contests, which included the annual Miss C4 event as well.

The only major downside to the show, as I mentioned in the event preview earlier this week, was the balance of television and movie guests to comic creators. While it’s something that didn’t overly affect my opinion of the show, it would have been great to see some more writers or artists working on larger, more recognizable projects aside from Michael Golden, Steve Scott and C4 regular Tommy Castillo to name a few. That being said, there were definitely some talented artists and creators in the C4 Artist Alley that I wasn’t familiar with before the event including local artist Neil Chenier, whose art absolutely blew me away, or writer/artist Rod Salm, the creator of the webcomic Death at your Door, who took it upon himself to post a panel and QR code in the men’s room to advertise his comic… which I promptly Googled and then checked out on the show floor.

With the Wizard World botched takeover now a thing of the past and having witnessed a successful rebirth of the event with my own eyes, I’m excited to see what Winnipeg has in store for it at C4 2012. As a final note, I’d like to thank both my fellow Editors Rob and Tim for their contributions to this weekend in the form of notes, photos and company. I’d also like to thank Krista for helping us avoid another technical meltdown earlier this afternoon as well.

See you all at C4 2012!

Tim:

It’s hard to describe the sense of belonging I felt this weekend with regards to C4 2011, all of Winnipeg was very excited about this event. The spirit of the show was the best I have ever seen at a Winnipeg con. All of the vendors, guests, and cosplayers were so friendly and genuinely happy to be at the event and it made the atmosphere absolutely riveting. Also I’ve got to give a shout out to my friend Mike Badejo (killasasa) for winning the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tournament, boom!

I thought the eclectic/varied atmosphere was great. As we have all mentioned from previous coverage there was everything from live wrestling to body painting to crazy dancing. And of course, they had the 1960′s TV Series Batmobile!

I also really enjoyed representing the POA crew along with Mike and Rob as I really felt we were apart of the event, of the excitement. Thanks to everyone at the event for being so damn cool and also all of those who followed POA’s coverage of C4.

If you guys thought this year was good, just wait. Next year will only get better.

Rob:

Rounding out the trifecta that was C4 2011, day three was all that you could ask for. There was a ton to take in, so we did our best in giving you a good look at what types of things you can expect to see next year.

I’d like to personally thank all the cosplayers & vendors that let us snap pictures, and everyone that took the time to talk to us about their costumes, products, etc.

I can’t wait to see everyone again, next year!

If you look closely at one of the pictures, you can see Wramil and I finding the notorious Astonishing X-Men Xenogenesis Issue 1. Ugh…
