Central Canada Comic Con 2011: Day 1 [Update]

Due to some technical difficulties we were unable to catch many pictures of the event on this opening day but there’s still plenty to discuss in terms of expectations as well as highlights from this opening day at the Central Canada Comic Con, going on all weekend right here in our hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, (you guessed it) Canada.

Update: This article has been updated to include notes from both Comics Editor Mike and Movies Editor Tim who were both in attendance during the con’s opening night.

Mike:

For starters, today was exclusively for weekend pass holders as we mentioned in our event preview the other night so the turnout was smaller than the one predicted to be appearing both Saturday and Sunday. That being said, having attended this particular convention for the past six or so years, I can say this was one of the busier opening nights I’ve seen. The advantage to having a night like this is that while you still get to see all the sights that the con has to offer, including some pretty awesome costumes, you also are able to check out all the event’s vendors without having to contend with a constant mob of people.

Speaking of costumes, there were certainly a diverse and creative mix this year. From Bounty Hunters right out of Star Wars to classic animated series style Harley Quinn, characters of all sorts were in attendance. A personal favorite of mine would have to be Jill Valentine (image) mainly because, rather than use her recent outfit from (what I believed to be a massive disappointment) Resident Evil 5, the woman sporting the costume opted for the classic Resident Evil 3 attire instead. Bonus points!

My fellow POA editor Tim Horn also attended the event this evening and, while I’m not about to speak for him, I think I’ve got a pretty good idea of which costume was his favorite for day one.

Much like last year, the event is once again home to a number of great booths from both local comic and collectible shops as well as many from all over North America each piled high with comics, action figures, swords and various other equally nerdy stock that should have pretty much any geek in attendance drooling.

While not all the special guests were in attendance, there was still plenty to take in on this preview night. Between the live wrestling, artist alley as well as the mentioned costumes and vendors it’s already shaping up to be another entertaining weekend for pop-culture fans of all forms.

Tim:

It’s back! Even without the presence of Wizard, C4 just keeps getting bigger and bigger.  Preview night was the perfect chance for me to take in all the comic books, toys, and t-shirt vendors while avoiding the rush of the weekend.  As Mike said, not all of the artists/guests were on hand, but it was still good to see some people show up (especially Emma Frost ;) ).

No Con would be complete without a wrestling ring and some sort of bizarre interpretive dance would it? C4 had all this in spades.  Live (and hilarious) wrestling, strange dancing, card tournaments, and of course larping was all going down last night and well it was a scene to behold.  The Marvel vs. Capcom 3 booth had the tournament players taking part in an exhibition that was all about style, and boy are these guys good.

As mentioned previously, there were a ton of vendors (both local and North America wide) that had loads of back issues (a lot of older stuff which is good to see), toys, busts, t-shirts, and even theme room hotels! Boom.

Unfortunately I will likely be unable to attend days two and three of C4 due to work constraints, but last night was the perfect opportunity to avoid the rush and check out what the vendors have in store for the remainder of the weekend.

Be sure to look out for Rob sporting his POA shirt today at the Con, and hell, why not get a picture with him too?

Central Canada Comic Con continues all weekend long with day passes, which are available at the door, running for $15.00 or weekend passes for $35.00. For all the info, check out the C4 official website.
