Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. has finally given the green light on the long in development live-action remake of the anime classic Akira. The film has been given the go-ahead with an unconfirmed budget (the budget was 90 million back in July when Warners initially hired Collet-Serra, no word on whether this number is still in play) and Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) directing.

According to Variety both Warner Bros. and Collet-Serra want Tron: Legacy lead Garrett Hedlund to star in the film.

Here is the trailer for the Blu-Ray release of the original film:

Originally released as a serialized manga in 1982, Akira the anime is a cyber punk science fiction film that was released in 1988 and is considered by many to be the greatest representative of the anime art form.
