GET REEL: New Releases for Sept 30, 2011

WRITTEN BY Tim Horn   Posted on 30 September 2011   Get Reel, Movie News

This week in Get Reel we take a look at Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in 50/50, another film by the makers of Fireproof called Courageous, Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts, and Rachel Weisz in Dream House, and finally, Anna Farris and Chris Evans in What’s Your Number?

50/50

Director: Jonathan Levine
Screenwriter: Will Reiser
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard

The Gist of it: Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a twenty-something man dealing with a recent cancer diagnosis. The film studies how one deals with cancer on both a personal and social level. Seth Rogen stars as his best friend who supports him through the cancer and struggles with his own fear of his friends diagnosis. Written by Will Reiser (and based off of his own experience with cancer) and directed by Jonathan Levine (The Wackness), 50/50 promises to be a funny and heartfelt look at getting better.

Why I’m Excited: First off, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen are awesome and they have both proven that they can handle roles of substance and range. Add Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard to the mix and well, that’s a lot of beautiful and talented people in one film.

Dream House

Director: Jim Sheridan
Screenwriter: David Loucka
Starring: Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts, Rachel Weisz

The Gist of it: Daniel Craig plays a successful publisher who quits his job and moves his wife (Weisz) and two daughters to a small, seemingly pleasant New England town. Once the family is comfortable in their new home, they learn the house was the scene of a murder of a mother and her children, with the husband being the only survivor. Chaos ensues.

Why I’m Torn: Unfortunately this film has bomb written all over it, although it appears as though this may be due more to an excessive studio presence than any artistic shortcomings. Still with a cast including Craig, Watts, Weisz, and one of my favorite character actors Elias Koteas, maybe the film will be a pleasant surprise… although I doubt it as the director and cast have all but disowned the project.

What’s Your Number?

Director: Mark Mylod
Screenwriter: Gabrielle Allan, Jennifer Crittenden
Starring: Anna Faris, Chris Evans, Ari Graynor, Blythe Danner, Joel McHale, Dave Annabelle, Andy Samberg, Zachary Quinto, Tom Lennon, Aziz Ansari, Anthony Mackie, Martin Freeman, Mike Vogel

The Gist of it: Anna Faris plays a woman who is afraid she let her best chance at a good relationship go, so she embarks on an epic journey in search of her best ex boyfriend. In a interesting twist, Chris Evans plays her sidekick on this journey of reawakening.

Why I Would Let Myself Be Convinced To Go: Anna Faris is entertaining, the trailer is pretty funny and the cast is good, so it should be a good rom-com.

Courageous

Director: Alex Kendrick
Screenwriter: Alex Kendrick, Stephen Kendrick
Starring: Alex Kendrick, Kevin Downes, Ben Davies, Matt Hardwick, Ken Bevel

The Gist of It: A group of policemen struggle through the daily challenges of managing a stressful career and being the best fathers they can be. Then a disaster strikes and they see the light…cast by God!

Why I have no desire to see this: Eh, another movie brought to you by the makers of Fireproof…I think I’ll skip this one. That’s not to say that this won’t be an excellent film for religious families and faith based organizations to see, however, as it does promote belief and faith in God quite strongly.

I very much want to see 50/50. I saw these guys on "Anderson" (don't ask me why I was watching that!) and the guy who the story was based on is Seth Rogen's best friend, so it really is a true story. Very cool stuff.
My wife will probably make me go see Dream House with her. And it will probably suck. I'll let you know.

50/50 is definitely on my must see list but I've fallen quite behind on new releases. I still have to see Moneyball and Drive! Dream House looks like an unfortunate case because the cast is so solid, but even the poster is pretty terrible.
